Westward Ho!

September 23, Thursday

We loaded up the big red truck and headed west towards Davenport, Iowa to visit Aunt Jane & Uncle George, Mike, and Laura. We gave Aunt Jane Kally's furs as Kally had wanted, the newest was about 30 years old. We had a little fashion show and David even tried on the raccoon coat!!!
We shared pictures that David's parents had, some of family, some of friends, and some of his parents in their younger days. It was fun looking at the pictures, finding out who the family was, and leaving some with Uncle George to copy.

September 24, Friday

We spent the night, had a yummy breakfast -thank you Aunt Jane- and headed west again on I-92, the back roads.
Muscatine, Iowa
On the Mississippi, cute little town with beautiful Victorian homes with widow walks, downtown and up on the hilltop.        Camera was in the back of the truck! Drat!!

Next was a quick stop in Columbus Junction, just past the Iowa river, and saw the Swinging Bridge.

Of course David had to walk out there and see what there was to see. He said it was creaky!
Being the weenie I am about heights, I stayed on solid ground and took a picture! and was prepared to call for help if needed.  He made it back safe and sound.

We got a shot from the road, too. Just to make sure you get the idea.

In Winterset, Iowa we saw a sign that said covered bridge - turn here, so we did.
One of the many Covered Bridges of Madison County, pretty!

Don't know if this is the area where the movie was made, but it was nice.
We did not see Clint Eastwood or any other stars lurking out there, well there was that cute guy driving the big red truck!

Freedom Rock

We had to take a detour off hwy 92 to hwy 25 and I spotted a painted rock. I hollered to David to turn around I had seen that in Readers Digest I was sure. Back we went and yes it WAS Freedom Rock. This rock is repainted each year by Bubba Sorenson as a way to pay tribute and say thank you to our soldiers. Bubba paints this large rock every May, has it done by Memorial Day, and maintains it using donations that people leave on site or some companies provide. Bubba is a young man in his early 20's, he and his wife have a photography shop in town. It was very humbling.
Great job Bubba and thank you.

The rock is painted on all 4 sides, I only got this view. Unfortunately the stop sign case a shadow on the lower portion.

more to follow.
